Designed by GamFratesi in 2013 and referencing the ingenious structure of insect shells, the Beetle Chair has become one of GUBI's iconic pieces and a modern design classic in the space of a decade.
Its durable outer shell resembles a continuous, curvilinear shape, reminiscent of the graceful contours of the insect that inspired it. Despite its sturdiness, it is designed to flex gently in response to micro-movements of the body, echoing the complex movements a beetle can perform under its rigid shell. This intelligent flexibility provides unmatched comfort, even after extended periods of sitting.
In the same way that the archetypal shape of the beetle is recognizable through different sizes and species, the initial design evolved into a collection comprising the dining chair, the lounge chair, the table, the sofa, the ottoman, Beetle stool, counter stool, bar stool and meeting chair. Together, they form a family of new typologies, without ever losing the characteristic line of the beetle that inspired their design concept.
Known for their aesthetic sensibility, the Italian and Danish designer duo, longtime collaborators of GUBI, designed this exquisite edition of four Beetle chairs titled "A Quartet of Expressions".
This edition allows design enthusiasts to express themselves while easily grasping the distinctive style of GUBI and GamFratesi.
“One of the great benefits of being a designer is being able to create bespoke versions of the products we design - for personal projects. Here are four examples that come to life in a cohesive edition. They represent expressions of the Beetle Chair that we already know and love and that seem very current, ”say Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi of GamFratesi.
Originally, each chair was tailor-made for GamFratesi's internal projects, and thought to evoke a specific atmosphere through its sensuality and tactility. In addition to offering supreme comfort, this edition allows materials, textures and colors to be layered to create a unique atmosphere in a given space.
The contemporary color palette of this collection adds a new perspective to a modern design classic and suits a wide variety of interior decors. Premium, textured upholstery fabrics in dark green, cool gray, neutral beige and two-tone white respond to Beetle's versatility, highlighting the possibilities for customization of its padded shell. Thanks to its distinctive shape, it can effectively be coated with a substantial range of colors and textures.
Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi explain: "We have always known that the Beetle Chair is a versatile piece, but it was very interesting to see how these four editions evoke such distinct moods and ambiences, simply by deploying different materials, colors and textures. "
The four new editions upholstered in its iconic Beetle chair:
The darker of the four Beetle chairs from GamFratesi Edit is upholstered in dark green chenille fabric.
The minimalist tones of the Boucle Beetle chair from GamFratesi Edit showcase the intriguing texture of its woolen fabric inspired by astrakhan fur, incorporating viscose and cotton. Its cool gray hue, combined with the black legs of the chair, evokes an atmosphere of serenity, while providing a soft and comfortable texture.
For the GamFratesi Edit, neutral beige velvet is combined with black legs to create a soft and welcoming version of an already iconic piece of furniture.
The double-yarn Sahco combines thick loop and chenille yarns to provide a two-tone white version for the lightest chair from the GamFratesi Edit.
